Alakh Pandey-The ‘Robinhood’ Behind India’s EdTech Revolution

In the bustling landscape of Indian startups, few stories are as compelling as that of Alakh Pandey. Known affectionately by millions of students as “Physics Wallah,” Alakh’s journey from a college dropout in Prayagraj to a billionaire entrepreneur whose net worth recently surpassed Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is a testament to grit and passion.

As the founder and CEO of Physics Wallah (PW), Alakh Pandey has disrupted the Indian education sector by making quality coaching accessible to the masses.

This article dives deep into his background, his meteoric career growth, and how he built a profitable unicorn in an industry riddled with losses.

Alakh Pandey’s Early Life and Financial Struggles

Born on October 2, 1991, in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, Alakh Pandey did not have a silver-spoon upbringing. His father, Satish Pandey, was a contractor, and his mother, Rajat Pandey, was a teacher. The family faced severe financial instability during Alakh’s childhood, eventually forcing them to sell their ancestral home and move into a slum-like rented apartment to make ends meet.

These hardships forced Alakh to grow up quickly. To support his family, he began tutoring children younger than him when he was just in the 6th grade, earning a meager ₹200. By the time he was in the 11th grade, he was teaching at coaching institutes, cycling kilometers daily to save money.

Education and The Decision to Drop Out

Alakh was a bright student who studied at Bishop Johnson School. He later cracked the entrance exam for the Harcourt Butler Technical Institute (HBTI) in Kanpur to pursue Mechanical Engineering. However, the rigid academic structure did not resonate with him.

In a move that shocked his family, Alakh dropped out of college in his third year to pursue his true passion: teaching physics. He returned to Allahabad and joined a coaching institute for a monthly salary of ₹5,000, driven by the belief that he could teach better than the professors he had encountered.

Journey to a Big EdTech Startup: The YouTube Era

The genesis of the Physics Wallah empire began in a small room with a whiteboard and a camera. In 2016, Alakh launched his YouTube channel, Physics Wallah – Alakh Pandey.

Initially, the growth was slow. However, his unique teaching style—blending theatrics, humor, and deep conceptual clarity—struck a chord with students who could not afford expensive coaching centers in hubs like Kota. His signature greeting, Hello Bachhon,” became a brand in itself. Unlike competitors who relied on heavy marketing, Alakh built a cult-like following organically. By 2019, his channel had crossed 2 million subscribers.

It was his refusal to monetize this early success that cemented his reputation. When a rival edtech giant offered him a salary of ₹75 crore to join them, Alakh famously rejected it, stating he preferred to empower the students of “Bharat” (rural India) rather than sell out.

The Transition from YouTube to Unicorn

In 2020, Alakh joined forces with Prateek Maheshwari, an IIT-BHU alumnus and serial entrepreneur, to launch the Physics Wallah app. The launch was a chaotic success; the app crashed on day one due to excessive traffic, with over 35,000 students enrolling immediately.

While other edtech giants burned cash on celebrity endorsements, PW remained bootstrapped and profitable for six years. The company’s philosophy was simple: Affordability. They offered complete JEE/NEET coaching courses for as low as ₹3,000–₹4,000, a fraction of the market rate.

In June 2022, Physics Wallah became India’s 101st unicorn after raising 100 million in its first funding round from West Bridge Capital and GSV Ventures.

Hybrid Model and Offline Expansion

Recognizing the limitations of online-only education, PW aggressively pivoted to a hybrid model. They launched “Vidyapeeth” offline centers across India. As of late 2025, the company operates over 300 offline centers in cities ranging from Kota and Delhi to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities like Dhanbad and Akola.

Alakh Pandey’s Net Worth and Wealth

Alakh Pandey’s financial rise has been meteoric. According to the Hurun India Rich List 2025, his net worth jumped by 223% to approximately ₹14,510 crore ($1.7 billion). This wealth surge placed him ahead of several established business tycoons and even Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on the rich list.

Despite his wealth, Alakh is known for his “Robinhood” image, reinvesting profits into the company to keep course fees low. PhysicsWallah (PW) has indeed moved toward a major public debut, with reports in late 2025 indicating preparations for an IPO with a total issue size of approximately ₹3,480 crore to ₹3,820 crore. The company aims to become India’s first listed edtech company after navigating the sector’s post-pandemic reset.

  • IPO Structure & Size: The IPO consists of a fresh issue of shares worth roughly ₹3,100 crore, along with an offer for sale (OFS) of shares worth approximately ₹380 crore by founders Alakh Pandey and Prateek Maheshwari.
  • Valuation: The company has been targeting a valuation of around US$5 billion (approx. ₹31,000–₹31,500 crore).
  • Use of Proceeds: Funds from the IPO are planned for expanding the offline “Vidyapeeth” centers, marketing and brand promotion, upgrading technology infrastructure (including AI tools), and pursuing strategic acquisitions.
  • Financials: While the company has shown rapid revenue growth (approx. ₹2,887 crore in FY25), it has also been managing losses (approx. ₹243 crore in FY25) as it scales its hybrid model.
  • Performance: The company has seen a significant turnaround in EBITDA, turning positive in FY25.

The IPO is designed to fuel its expansion into offline and hybrid learning, with 303 centres operated as of June 2025. The company has indicated it is focused on long-term growth through a blend of online affordability and offline expansion.

Personal Life: Alakh Pandey’s Wife and Family

Alakh Pandey’s personal life has also garnered significant public interest. After focusing entirely on his career for years—and reportedly enduring two failed relationships—he met Shivani Dubey, a freelance journalist.

The couple got engaged in May 2022 and tied the knot on February 22, 2023, in a private ceremony. Shivani has been a pillar of support, often seen cheering for him at major company events, including the company’s recent listing ceremonies.

Challenges and Controversies

The journey wasn’t without hurdles. As PW grew, it faced intense rivalry. In 2023, the company faced a “poaching war” where rival edtech firms allegedly offered crores to PW teachers to quit. This led to a dramatic exit of some star educators who formed their own channel, “Sankalp Bharat,” accusing PW of losing its core vision—allegations Alakh and his team vehemently denied.

Furthermore, as the company expanded, it had to navigate the difficult transition from a “family-like” YouTube channel to a corporate entity, including performance-based layoffs in 2023.

Additionally, the Alakh AI suite includes:

The company is also expanding into the K-12 school market and looking to capture the South Indian market through strategic acquisitions like Xylem Learning. With an IPO on the horizon in late 2025,

Alakh Pandey’s mission remains clear: to ensure that money is never an obstacle to education in India.
